Big shakeup in the Database world – Sun buys MySQL
I predict a big shakeup in the database world with Sun’s acquisition of MySQL.
We looked at MySQL as a product platform in my previous company and used it as a backend admin system and were pretty impressed. We also use it in our backend here.
With Sun behind it this platform could go even further.
Mark,

2. If I don’t buy your book it’s because there are 10 or so way ahead in my list of books to buy – many of them agile books with a more practical bent – to my mind that’s what we need more of. That’s also what Agile is – firmly rooted in practice. There are just too many books with an overview, presumably written for managers and such who wouldn’t know what an IDE was if it fell on them from the sky.
3. Sun are obviously going for mySQL because they realise that there are more websites running on it than any other database. I don’t see how it’s a natural fit with java. All those Oracle coders aren’t suddenly going to change over to a ‘toy’ database like mySQL. Which reminds me, Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM all have free entry level database products which in many ways are all better than mySQL. So why don’t we see loads of new apps. being written for these? Because of inertia. Hosting companies know how to set up mySQL and they can’t be bothered with anything else. [Just you try finding hosts for Oracle or DB2 Exrpess editions - I wish you luck - you'll need it.]
Hi Mark,

- Thanks for pointing this out. One of our other sites was hacked last week and it looks like the process of rebuilding that site has clobbered the CGN web site today. My webmaster is looking at this urgently.
2. Well it’s not strictly my book – I’ve never written a book. If you’re referring to ‘Code Generation in Action’ – this was written by Jack Herrington, the previous editor of CGN – and I have to confess I haven’t got around to reading that either although it is in my book stack.
I did a post a while back on the best books on Model-Driven Code Generation – http://blog.software-acumen.com/2007/04/16/the-best-books-on-model-driven-code-generation/ if you’re interested.
I also did one on the relationship of Agile and Code Generation approaches at http://blog.software-acumen.com/2006/11/22/are-code-generators-incompatible-with-agile-development/
3. Yes inertia is a problem as it is with many technologies across our industry. Sun will bring $$$s to the game and will make mySQL a competitor. I think another couple of factors will see an increase in mySQL deployment – it’s cheap (at least on the face of it and that’s what Financial Directors look at) and new people entering the industry are much more likely to be familiar with mySQL than with a commercial DB.
