Linux gets mobile boost

Not exactly breaking news (we’ve been busy) but I see that a number of big names are banding together to form a consortium to promote Linux for the mobile phone market, which, at least in the smartphone subsector, is dominated by Symbian and Microsoft.

I guess that this could eventually lead to a standardised Linux across a wide range of mobile devices although how long that will be in coming is anyone’s guess and this type of consortium isn’t guaranteed to succeed. In the meantime, the issue of handset diversity is likely to continue to plague mobile developers, even those just developing for the small batch of existing Linux-based phones.
